The importance of a radiator cover for kindergartens and schools

Benefits, disadvantages, and importance of a radiator cover for children in kindergartens and schools

Children playing and running around radiators can lead to dangerous situations, like bumping their heads against the hard metal or burning their hands, and probably lots of tears. This can easily be prevented by installing a radiator cover. Discover the benefits, disadvantages, and importance of a radiator cover for children in kindergartens and schools.

How to make radiators safe for children?

To start off, what are the dangers of a radiator for children? Heaters keep the room warm during winter, but at the same time also present a lot of dangers to children. Children might burn themselves on the hot metal pieces or bump their heads on the very sharp and hard edges and corners.

A radiator cover protects children from touching the hot radiators and therefore preventing dangerous burns. A child-safe radiator cover offers extra safety features like having rounded corners to prevent severe injuries in case of an accident.

What is the ideal radiator cover for kindergartens and schools?

Radiator covers are available in all shapes and sizes and can be custom-made by a carpenter or handyman. A well-designed radiator cover that is safe for children has to check a few boxes:

  • completely covers the radiator
  • stimulates heat circulation
  • the cover does not get hot
  • is fixed to the wall
  • rounded corners
  • non-toxic material
  • paint or varnish is child-safe EN71-3

Arte Viva has developed its own child-safe Radiator Cover that meets all these requirements. Continue reading to find out more about the ideal radiator cover for kindergartens and schools.

It is quickly and easily installed and a more convenient option than the traditional custom-made covers saving lots of time. Have look at the instruction video and see how easy it is to assemble and install the Radiator Cover.

What are the disadvantages of a radiator cover?

When talking about the advantages, we must discuss the disadvantages of a radiator cover as well. If a radiator cover is poorly designed, heat loss can occur. This is a negative aspect as the temperature in schools and kindergartens should always be warm. Some radiator covers can trap the heat and block the airflow. Our child-safe Radiator Cover is designed with air vents that stimulate heat circulation and therefore our radiator cover limits the heat loss, if there’s any.

How hot can a radiator get?

Radiators can get extremely hot. The water that flows through radiators is heated up to 80°C, so you really do not want children to touch the pipes or radiators.

What temperature should a kindergarten be?

The temperature in a kindergarten should be pleasant for children. The Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment advises placing a thermometer in every room where children stay.  In living and play areas, 20°C is ideal. In the sleeping area, 18°C is optimal. Make sure that the temperature is not lower than 15°C, because then condensation will form. During condensation, the moisture penetrates into the material, such as in mattresses. This promotes the growth of fungi. Avoid temperature fluctuations of more than 5 °C in the collection areas. They also cause condensation. Keep the humidity between 30% and 70%.[1] [2]
