What to do when your kid hits their head

Tips and things to pay attention to if your child has bumped their head, fallen on their head, or had a blow to the head.

Especially younger playful and active children are often hitting their heads on corners, edges, pillars or posts, walls, and floors, etc.  Here are some tips on how to respond properly when this happens:

What can you do in the event of a fall or blow to the head?

You should try and cool the spot with a bag of ice or frozen peas directly to reduce the risk of a bump. It is best to wrap the cool bag into a towel, so the cold is not directly exposed to the sensitive head.

When to seek emergency attention or call a doctor?

If the child seems confused, disoriented, is unconscious or the head injury is bleeding, seek medical attention as soon as possible. If the following symptoms occur, a doctor should be visited as well. Those symptoms might also show after a few hours.

  • Worsening or persistent headache
  • Deteriorated sense of balance
  • Vomiting
  • Confusion or loss of memory

Safety tips to prevent head injuries for children

Not all accidents can be avoided, and it is not possible for kids to wear a helmet all day long, however it is possible to avoid the most common accidents quite easily without restricting children´s play.  To help prevent a majority of head injuries and accidents of this nature, make sure the environment is child and baby-proof and the correct protection is in place!

We have collected some tips to prevent head injuries to children and babies:

1. Secure all edges and corners

A fall against a sharp edge, wall, or corner can quickly lead to a doctor’s visit. With our edge protection, you avoid nasty injuries, because they cover dangerous corners and edges. The corner and edge protectors from Arte Viva prevent serious injuries if children bump into sharp edges or corners. Corner and edge protection are indispensable in kindergartens, schools, crèches, children’s playgrounds, and indoor playgrounds. Our Corner Guard Deluxe and Corner Guard Deluxe Pencil also have a great design that is perfect for children.

2. Secure floors and teach your child to balance

At 62%, falls are the most common cause of injuries reported in hospitals in children between 0 and 3 years of age. When a child takes the first steps, the risk of falling increases dramatically. They fall off the stairs, out of bed, a high chair, play equipment – basically everything. Here are some tips to help prevent fall injuries:

  • Always supervise children
  • Teach your child balance and avoid falling
  • Provide a safe environment (e.g. remove clutter, install protection)

The Arte Viva ‘floor and wall mat‘ is a child-friendly mat that prevents children from injuring themselves if they hit the wall or fall while playing.

3. Secure pillars and walls where children often play

Pillars, walls, and corners can be dangerous for children. A collision with a wall or pillar while running can be serious for children. To ensure a safe environment for children, they must be protected with shock-absorbing materials.

You can use the Pillar and Wall Guard to create a safer environment for children. There are various methods to limit the likelihood of accidents and injuries in the children’s area. Wall and pillar protection is a suitable solution for shielding walls and columns and reducing dangerous situations for children in daycare centers, sports facilities, and other spaces.
